I purchased two handmade pure silk (on cotton backing) floral rugs from a factory in Beijing China about 15 years ago which a friend shipped back to the US in her household goods. They were used as area rugs for about 7 years, recently cleaned and in good condition; although have a few small stains. One measures approx. 6' x 9' and the other 10' x 12.' The smaller rug is light brown, beige, cream, peach, coral, yellow, and light and dark green. The larger one is: lavender, beige, taupe, medium brown, yellow, green and light and dark blue. I understand from my rug cleaner these may be somewhat rare as they are no longer allowed to be imported into the US. I would greatly appreciate any comments from the community here on possible value of these rugs, and best ways to possibly sell them.

hi jsquared,

these are somewhat more uncommon, but not exactly rare or not allowed to be imported from my understanding. most of these ive seen were made in the 80's, staining is going to affect value a lot. If it is silk (some brought in were not real silk) brand new in unused condition at retail, i have seen these recently at around $4,000 in 9x12'. Real silk ones were expensive, but not too many people go after these much more.

We really have to see more photos of the stains to say for sure, but in case you can't get them, for this type of rug, even with mild scattered stains, automatically subtract (from the $40 per foot example above) 40%-70%, given it's private party sale, subtract another 40-60%

the market is soft, I would suggest trying craigslist. I would recommend second opinion too

I believe that this rug is art silk, or mercerized cotton. Generally rugs of this type from that period were made of this material. Another indicator is that the color of an art silk piece fades over time. This type of rug is still made, but only in small quantities, as the style does not sell well at the moment. I agree with RugPro in that craigslist or your local paper would be the best place to sell these. I'm afraid that it will be a tough sell with the stains.
