My parents bought the rug in the early seventies for $1,500.00. They don't remember where it was made, but remember it was a style not common to the country of origin (eg. Indian style rug made in Iran or vice versa). I've had it for the past ten years, and periodically ponder its origin and value.

The rug is primarily white with light and dark brown diamond design with a pattern in some squares. The squares/diamonds are about 10" square. The entire rug is about 19' x 12' and quite thick. The backing is relatively soft and has the same pattern in the same location. The braided "pigtails" at the two ends should help identify it. It's made of a soft wool that tends to shed a little.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Mr. Wilson,

Welcome to the forum.

So the rug you posted looks like an indo- Moroccan shag rug. Sounds pretty large. it's not uncommon for these to shed a bit only because the yarn is spun to a very wide gauge with not too much twist. Can you describe the condition? are there stains, moth damage, repairs, etc?

Hi there -

I think this rug is most likely an Ethiopian piece. The knot count is a little low to be Moroccan, however I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility. Maybe 95% chance it is Ethiopian and 5% chance it is Moroccan. If it is stiff and bulky in feel, it would be Ethiopian, and if it is more supple, then Moroccan. The foundation of the rug appears to be a camel/goat mixture and the pile natural wool.

These types of rugs are susceptible to moth damage, so it is important to take good care of it, vacuuming it front and back, to make sure that the pile remains in good condition. The current market for this rug isn't all that great because the size is oddly large and the color scheme isn't "in" right now, so I'd hold to it, as the resale value isn't very high. Styles change, though, so you never know!
