Hi RugPro and other Rug Rats,

I just had to get these photos up of the Animal Rug. This is my favorite even though it is ruined. I would like any opinions or information about the rug, but may well keep it in the house and use it to walk on.

The rug measures about 12 feet by 8 feet 2 inches. I know the rug is more than 50 years old, because I used to study it as a child. If you look at it from the bottom there is a big vase of flowers, and then there is a large bird in each of the upper corners. There are animals being killed on each side. The boarder has anmimals running around it, and a few more being killed.

My mother has always said that this is not such a valuable rug. I have always liked it, and every time I think of her ruining it, it makes me angry. Mom had, and has some problems. She ruined the rug by keeping it in a dirty, dingy bedroom with dirty clothes and dusty boxes all over it. She just wouldn't let anyone talk any sense to her.

What would you guys think? Can you tell where it was made? Could it be named after the area it was made in the Middle East, as some are?

Sincerely,

Bob

lol,

Hi rugtalker! This would have been a really fun rug to grow up with. When I saw the first photograph of the entire rug, I thought the design was very much out of the norm for a persian carpet execution. Maybe Turkey would have this design, maybe very early India.

However, af looking more at the structure and isolated designs, I can say with good information this is most likely a Persian Rug. Some conditional issues here and there, a bit of fading in some areas and a few moth spots. Really not in that bad a shape it seems though. It's really an awesome piece. I would agree, I don't think it's incredibly valuable, but it def. has some value. My guess is 1940's Mashed from Iran. I say Mashed (mashad, meshed, etc) for several reasons: the structure, ends, weft, the types of colors used, the unusual design... Mostly the purple color, and some design elements in the field an smaller borders

Hi RugPro,

Thanks for the info on the "Animal Rug". I wrote some more chat on the "Small Rug (Isfahan)" thread". You could check that out too if you like. For now thanks for your opionion, and I do value that. I would like to post more info on this forum in the future. We are at this point just trying to take an inventory of what we have.

Sincerely,

rugtalker

Rugtalker, RugPro mentioned getting a local expert for a more definate statement on age of rug etc. Have you also considered using the same source to discover restoration of this rug? From your explanation it would be for dollar value, but value to you. I'm not sure how extensive the damage is since you state rug and ruin in the same statement, but that's what a hands on expert can tell you. Who knows maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised

This is Kashan from 1950. ...maybe 1940...the best hint is the medachyl border. This speciall pink, i guess sometimes fading a bit. But the green looks very nice.
