...it's been a while, but i'm back... what do WE think... seller states it's 8X10 and might be of indian origin. i got the best photos from here i could... i believe to be kerman iran, but then again, i'm no expert... i leave that to Rugpro... my rug hero (remember Rugpro, i do the architecture and you do the rugs...but actually, you said you wanted to be an architect, so maybe i should be asking you architecturally related questions as well :)!

...seller asking $650

thanks.

Hi,

I agree and am pretty sure, India. From the unDerside and the fringes. tho could also be China RugPro and possibly Nathan will provide in the important data.

But I like the feline best of all. She or he has selective tea washing! Plus, her ends are intact and she totally has FULL PILE!!!! Very special.Applause

If I may ask, is that a Sarouk under the feline and the rug you are asking about?

...thanks for the reply...and good question a/ the underneath rug...i've asked her to send a pic of that as well. the kerman and sarouk are my two favorite pieces... if you go back to the early posts in this group you can see my entire rug collection...it basically started w/ a tremendous find on craigslist by dumb like...now i, like most, are hooked on rugs... i only try to get them on the real cheap and usually through craistlist... i search the country and try and see if i can make a deal... it's mild entertainment, but they go so well in our '30s tudor revival home... we love period decor...

... i have yet to find my sarouk, though!!!

...oh, and based on your comments, you are by far way more intelligent on the subject than i!

LOL Dancing Dancing Dancing Hey Mosaic!!!

This is what points to indian: knot barrels, kilim, alternating blue and red woven in kilim, and simpler interpretation.

However, I'm 85% sure this is an Iranian rug from the mid to late 1960's early 70's. Here's why:

The knots are slightly uneven showing some weft. More so in some areas than other, especially around the edge where it looks a little more irregular. Edges are tighter in some areas, looser in others. Even some dropped wefts have not been cleaned up. Not a defect, but not exactly how an Indian rug would be finished. It just has the finish of an Iranian kerman, and all the previously stated things that point to being Indian are the same for this type Kerman.

It's a nice rug, if in very good condition, it doesn't seem to be at a half bad price. Again not as intricate as many of the vintage, but a nice looking piece.

Outside of the usual questions for the seller, the only thing I would be wary of is the area at the bottom of the second picture. It could be lighting/nothing. But if you look carefully, there's a slight dark grey outlining on the back of the rug. I would ask what this is. I have seen similar patterning on the back of rugs before which actually turned out to be areas incompletely dried out after spills or exposure to water. Make sure the rug is soft and malleable all around. Expect to pay for cleaning on top of whatever number they provide, and specifically ask if there are any stains.

P.S. It looks like that rug underneath may be a american sarouk design :)
