Hi there. I inherited this rug from my extensively well travelled Grandfather some time ago. I think it's a Turkomen main rug but not sure. It's 220cm x 280cm with a 5cm fringe. I know he had the rug for over 50 years himself and remember him saying it was quite old when it bought it. I would LOVE to know more about the kind of rug (origin etc) and approximate value - even just a ball park figure so I know whether or not I should insure in separately to my standard house hold insurance.

Much appreciated.

I tried very hard to get a fair reprosentation of the colours in the rug but they still make it look slightly more pale than it is.

I'd say Afghani village/tribal rug (Baluch?) with a Turkmen Ersari design, possibly made by Turkmen refugees. I don't think it's much older than 50-60 years. It looks like your rug has wool wefts & cotton warps; can you tell? I defer to RugPro and the other retailers for valuations, but IMO you do not need a special insurance rider - value is likely in the hundreds, not thousands.

Hey thanks so much for that! I've never imagine it to be worth a fortune but was curious as to where it came from as I think it looks quite unusual (not actually my kinda rug but don't have the heart to be rid of it). Sorry, I'm a total novice - no idea what wool wefts/cotton warps actually mean but gather its damage?

Nathan's spot on with attribution I think. Could be older than 60, but probably not too much. Replacement value on a worn rug like this is fairly low, but the age may help.

Insurance would probably be around 1K tops, probably even a little lower. Retail you wouldn't really find a rug this used, and private party would probably be a couple hundred. This all is assuming there are no splits, dry rot, serious repairs, etc. Newer ones in really good condition are pretty inexpensive too. I've seen some really nice examples with very high grade wool around 4k for a 9x12, but these are the top of the top. Mint condition, good age and really choice pieces.
