I bought this pretty little rug (@ 4' x 6') about a year ago from a reputable store that was closing due to the owners health. I was told that it is a bijar but, have since been told that bijars do not feature animals in the pattern. So here are my questions;
1) Should I stop calling it a bijar?
2) If it is not a bijar then, what is it?
3) Is it a new rug or a bit older? The sales person was guessing 20-30 years old.
4) Are the animals depicted goats, deer or something else?
Any light you could shed on it's provenance would be appreciated and let me know if you'd like any more information.

Hello and welcome.

I do not know for sure if this is Persian. My guess is that it probably is, but also the motif and design elements look there's a possibility this is from another area. I have seen rugs from Cherkez that have similar type of wool, knots, design, etc... the "turtle" border design may allude to bidjar, although they are very stylized in this rug which again may point to a different NW Iran rug. Overall it's a very attractive little piece.

1: I would not stop calling it a bijar design because it is very similar in many respects. It is not entirely uncommon for some bijar rugs to have animals in them
2: It may be from another area of Iran such as outside Tabriz or slim possibility of elsewhere. The one row of larger knots toward the fringe hint outside of Iran tho.
3: My best guess would be 1960's for age tops. Maybe as new as 25 years, but probably a bit older.
4: I think the animal motif is deer.

It certainly looks like a Persian (Iranian) Bijar to me; note the row of embroidery/twining below the last row of knots (see the photo of the backside, 3rd pic from the bottom), which is a Bijar embellishment I've yet to see Indo-Bijars replicate. Bijars are known in the trade as "the iron rug of Persia" due to their construction: thick wefts that are (rumor has it) wet first and then pounded down using a specially weighted weavers comb (so it can be used as a hammer). The foundation yarns are packed so tightly with this method that these rugs literally weigh more than the same size rug from another area, and have a very stiff handle. There are medallion Bijars, "mahi" designs using the repeating Herati motif/medallion, and allover designs to name a few.

I'd say the dealer was spot on re: the age.
Looks like deer and gazelles to me.

Great points nathan. one of the reasons I said perhaps as old as 1960's was because of the purple and rust. Also if this was imported new I think this may be pre-embargo because quality control was difficult post 1975.

Thank you for the information and comments! I am happy that I can continue to call it a bijar. It is definitely my favorite rug and I'm glad you appreciate it too! If anyone else has an opinion on the design and deer/goats/gazelles I'd love to hear them.
