RugPro shared some thoughts and hints on colors and then Nathan shared that he had just been to Turkey and saw first hand how the different colors came from different areas.

I had previously posted this rug, but the rug might be a good example to show exactly how the colors are intrepreted. My pictures will focus on the colors alone rather than worrying about knot type and count (then my edit didn't work and the back picture before it was cleaned is dominant) RugPro already did a great job in IDing the turkish double knot.

I'm interested in any comments, and explanation that can help in my education.
Thanks

Silk rugs are not my strength, sorry.
In general, W. Turkish rugs use more primary colors (think of a basic set of crayons: red, yellow, blue, green, purple, brown, black), in simple combinations. The more you head east (and further from the popular tourism spots), the more you see rugs that reflect "Turkish" colors and color combinations: pistachio greens mixed with blueish reds for instance. This is all SO hard to put into words. You just CAN'T learn these subtleties online...

I don't place much emphasis on colors, but you can't disregarding them either. Most castes i use colors for identifying age, not identifying type. This can be very misleading: one of the better first indicators is structure.

Applause I couldn't agree more; colors are just one clue, a single piece of the puzzle, but structure does not lie. OK, rarely lies. :)

lol, very true. maybe not so much for newer rugs, but some of the older rugs can be very deceiving when looking at structure vs. design/colors etc.
