I am a newbie but always liked good carpets.... the guide on identifying a true hand knotted carpet was really amazing !

Would appreciate some help with price estimates on the below rug

RED RUG :
It was purchased 13 years ago from an antique dealer in Boston... probably an afghan wool rug is what the seller tells me.

Attached are some pictures ..

Is this a real hand knotted rug ?
What would you estimate the value at ?
She is asking $325 for it ... from my research I am placing it at $125 or so.

Thanks,
William

hello and welcome to the forum!

This is for the TOP rug. You may find it to be more helpful to post the rugs individually

Appears to be hand knotted. Sometimes you see this up on ebay advertised as afghan bokharas. Sometimes Tekke or other attribution, but these are quite different than tekke. I've seen these made in significantly varying qualities. Condition is pretty important for these pieces too.

Not that I necessarily agree or disagree, but if you don't mind me asking what resources pointed you to the $125

Second rug I recognize the rug and the floors from an ebay seller. We can talk about each more on different threads Applause

Hello ... that was lightning fast response .. THANK YOU !

I am expecting you to laugh at this analysis but all the experience i have with rugs is since earlier today :)

Thank you for the pictures. Helps me get a better point of reference for coming to a
reasonable price.

I am using the below rug for reference:
http://www.overstock.com...-x10/822986/product.html

The rug above would be ~ $14 per sq ft.
Considering lesser intricacy in work, colors and larger knots I am estimating your rug to be
in the ~$11 per sq.ft range.

The estimated new price of your rug would be about $600 (54 sq.ft X $11)

Since the rug is 13 years or so old, I am thinking about $125 for the rug.

lol, that's an interesting assessment. I don't disagree with the concept of comparing rugs, but I do think that the rug compared, although very similar, can be somewhat misleading.

I want to mention something because I know going by images is helpful sometimes. However, I have seen this design of Afghan rug go for upwards of $60 per foot for very high quality & luster wool and an excellent example with subtle detail.

Now on eBay, completely different variety of this Afghan type. I've seen some of these styles sell for as little as a few dollars a foot. I wouldn't throw numbers out to her unless seeing the rug in person. Condition is everything. It may be she's asking a fair price, although I do think this is of the ebay type genre.
