Hello Ron,

I have read through the post.

This is an interesting rug. I respectfully disagree with Pro's dates of 1910-1940.

In my opinion, this is a 100-120 year old rug, but I do agree with Pro that 150 years old is "a stretch." I agree also with the higher value range Pro made note of.

If this were my rug and I were in your position, I would rely on someone local to see the rug in person.

The gentleman who appraised the rug at $50,000 for insurance purposes: I would ask him how much he would be willing to pay for it.

Replacement value for older rugs is different than newer rugs of this type. My sentiment is the value provided was high, and you'll pay big premiums to insure for this amount.

Additionally, if you were to sell this rug at Sotheby's or Christies, it would go for $7,000 give or take. That's the market as we know it here in the states. If a dealer were to offer this rug at a showroom, asking price may be much different.

All the best,

thanks David for the comment. perhaps at auction things might be different. i sent some photos to christies at london to see what they think. they promised to reply soon. I also thought of asking the man who appraised it if he has a buyer and he said yes . i might call him back on this and see beyond any hype what price his buyer is willing to pay. i will update you if anything interesting happens. by the way i used the site program to appraise the carpet by plugging in the values and the result was very high. since you founded the site, can you inform me if the program is accurate or updated and if so how come the estimate it gives is so high compared to what the verbal-visual estimates have been?. by the way the program is cool .just plug in and go!
regards

Ron,

I am happy you enjoy the Rug Estimator Pro. Unfortunately, it does not take in account many factors which are essential to "grading" a rug.

The Rug Estimator Pro was developed for educational/entertainment purposes. When I sold rugs, everyone who dabbled in basic info would ask the KPSI. KPSI is not the Carbon of rugs. That's the idea behind the tool.

Whereas for newer rugs, the tool has some "intelligence" to approximate rugs in close categories, the problem you may be finding is that the antique category needs to be programmed for a rug so unique as yours. Animal Motif is something we have yet to input.

I have found the dominating animal motifs are not as popular in America as they are in countries such as the one's they're woven in. Majority of collectors here would prefer to spend $xx,000 on a silk Kashan with traditional pattern than $xx,000 on a Kashan with Animals as the main feature.
