I have seen different rugs on ebay named bokhara, and then I read in the books that there is a "fine bokhara" which seems to be the elite of turkomen. First are the names just interchangable, or is there truely a fine bokhara that is desireable.

Second, the little rug/mat 2'by3' has a very fine knot and appears to be silk. The smell when burning it is definately a animal smell altough it would seem to fine to be wool.

Does something like this have any value to a private party.. First, it needs some minor work with a loose salavage and some loss on one corner. It fits some other rugs in my office so I thought I would drap it over the cormer of my roll top desk.

But it's always nice to know if it's something of value or a commerized item almost like a T shirt shop in Hawaii.

I'm not sure if you can really see the knotting, but I count 22 row in the quarter.

Thanks again RugPro

You know a lot of rug people will tell you that there's no such thing as a Bokhara design. "Bokhara" has become synonymous with Tekke style. i.e. a repeating gul pattern often found to have quadrants (sometimes known as an 'elephant footprint' but actually a stylized flower).

I look at this rug and it is a nice piece, but with the given photographs I cannot determine much more than color and overall pattern.

As for value, anything that is handknotted, in good condition, and decent colors has resale value.

Btuma, you bring many interesting rugs to the forum. Is it possible to get better photographs?

I could make plenty of assumptions or guesses, but I do not want to misinform.

Another question RugPro, I have a very nice tabriz larger rug. I have had it for a time, but I just noticed. just left of center in the whitle area there is a red H sewn in the rug. There is no other H opposite it or anywhere else on the rug. Obviously, H is not a Roman alphabet H, but what would it be. Or is it one of those things that it was put there because the weavers could and no real reason why?

Interesting.

Without seeing it, there are half-dozen explanations for what this may be.

Some of what come to mind are:
- Intentional "mistakes" to make carpets asymmetrical (i.e. a nod to God that nothing else is perfect)
- an upside-down lower case H (h- basically a y) can be read as a number- although I can't say why a number would be there.
- a simplified animal (dependent on the weaving)
-or like you said no specific reason.

This is all assuming that it is woven in with the regular knots in the pile.
