First of all I definately don't have the pictures that are neccesary, since these are from an ad. My main question is the lack of border with this rug. When I look at this rug this afternoon will the lack of border mean it's a Sino-Kerman or Indo-Kerman? It is a 9'X6' rug.

On another rug RugPro called it a floating border, but that was an older rug. The story of this rug is it was with the house purchased 8 years ago. located in a part of town with older but very nice wooden floor homes. They like wood floors, but don't really like rugs. The first owner of the house said it an antique rug worth $1,500. They had someone else come out and tell them it was a $1,500 rug. They want a best offer.

A claim of $1,500 would seem to be for a common Kerman.

They don't know anything about rugs, but think it is a silk rug becuase of bright colors, feel and since they did a burn test and the thread balled up rather than leaving a thread.

I'm certainly assuming it's not silk since a 9X6 silk rug would not be $1,500 in any book. Obviously the first thing I wil look at is the thread count and having to be awful fine if it silk.

But the silk count is secondary. Does a Kerman need to have a Kerman border?

Thanks

Btuma,

You are asking all the right questions here.

Re: Silk- silk and wool respond similarly in the burn test (as far as balling up and leaving a dark nub) because they are both organic protein based. It doesn't appear to be silk from what I see anyway. As a side note, whether in person or in catalogs (of auctions etc. ) I have only ever seen a few silk true Kermans- at that one of which may be a false attribution- but all of which were silk on silk foundations... And you are right, they were all worth well over 1500.

silk kerman

tabriz or kerman

Your question regarding the border is interesting. I'm not suggesting that this is the case for this rug, but we see plenty of carpets that have had their borders removed for one reason or another. Because the border of a Kerman has been removed, does not make it any less of a Kerman. Unfortunately borders are often very useful clues in identifying any given carpet. As for Kermans, there is certainly typical "Kerman border" however the borders on Kermans are very varied making it difficult to pinpoint a Kerman by its border alone.

With that being said, my personal feeling about thsi particular carpet is that it appears to be Kerman design, and could very well be a Kerman from Iran with a stylized border. But I cannot tell from the CL photos.

You may not want to hear this but, if you are interested in this rug for resale, I do not think this is the best prospect for a flip. jmo.
