Dumb queston on machine made rug

The attached picture has the end fringe anchored on the body. I know this has to be a machine made rug, but yesterday there was a beautiful varily big silk rug on ebay. The rug was old and beautful with a $500 reserve. The only thing that threw me was the picture of the back looked like rows abouve a row, both very perfect. Therefore, I assumed it was machine made and asked that of the owner who knew nothing about rugs. He talked to a dealer, and immediately pulled the rug off because it was pure silk.

But again any anchoring of the fringe is a sure sign it's machine made, correct?

There are hand knotted rugs that could have anchored fringe like you mentioned, but this is somewhat infrequent and isolated to used rugs with improper re-fringe technique for the most part.
