Here is a rug I acquired many years ago while living in Riyadh . I gave it to my mother and haven't thought about it since. It's been rolled up in a cedar closet for 20 years. It seems in very good shape. Wool on cotton foundation. Dimensions: 3'9”x 5' 10” There is some signs of abrash in fist 6 inches of one end. (see picture). Standard questions, age, value etc.

Cheers

Andy

It is a Mahi design but I am afraid I believe it is Indian. If I am correct and it is Indian then the auction value would be about $350 to $500.

Thank you for your insight. I was leaning Afghani. I'm here on the forum to expand my knowledge. What makes you think Indian vs Afghani, other? It was a gift to my Mother and it made her happy. My valuation... priceless. :)

For me its the weave and the finishing. The kilim fringe and the way stop ends were done. With rugs you will find it is about seeing as many as you can and it is that experience that will help in identification and ageing. Having said that you will find two experts would still disagree frequently on difficult items. These days different countries do copies and some of them very good and its difficult to identify.

I guess the only way to get 20 years of experience is to do something for 20 years. Many thanks
