I just purchased this rug. The size is 60" x 96". It is worn and in need of edge work. There is a tag attached but is sewn on with the same thread used to bind the fringe edge. I do believe there is loss of a border at both ends. Can someone help me with a type and age? Thank you in advace

Hi,
I agree with Nick on the region of Shiraz, Fars in Southwest Iran, but it also has elements of the Khamseh Arab tribe (still IraniaN, Fars region) with the overal reddish background and serrated connected medallions and chickens, pecking and strutting,but it also has the wonderful lions of the Qashqai and it's double wefted with brown wefts, so I think it's more Qashqai than Khamseh Arab. Usually Qashqai rugs have very beautiful vegetable glowing colors and the ground is full of whimsical figures. But, I agree with Nick that it's Qashqai, but I think a bit older...maybe 1930's? I meant to say Southwest-- not Southeast Iran...correcting the region

Thank you for your response Nick and Cartona! In your opinion is this rug worth being repaired? As I mentioned the border on both sides seem to be missing and the rug salvaged need to be rewrapped. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and opinions!!

If you plan to use it on the floor, the selvage and ends should be stabilized to prevent any additional loss of knots. Selvage rewrapping is bot as expensive as ends stabilzing and reweaving. You could spend about $200 or more on these conservation efforts. Without conservation, the knots will roll off the rug and you will begin to lose the rug. I do a lot of my own repairs, so for me it is time and finding the yarn and right needles make them. If it was my rug, I would conserve it.

BTW, the tag on the rug says it's been moth proofed by a German company.

[/I want to clarify a comment I made. Reweaving is very expensive and probably prohibtive for this rug. But the ends should be secured and tied off and the sides rewrapped. quote]

Thank you Cartona for the information. It appears the German company that moth proofed it also secured the fringe edge as their tag is attached with the same string. The salvage needs rewrapped and it desperately needs a good cleaning. Do you know what a estimated value would be? I researched but value ranges from decorative to collectable. I'm confused as to which category this would fit.

Qasqui rugs are very common made in there
Thousands
For them to have any great value they would have to been made
In the mid to late nineteenth century
Yours and a few that I have sadly were not and have
limited value

Thank you Nick for the information. For future reference, could you share with me how you quickly confirmed this is not antique? I really like these types of rugs and I've gone to a rug dealer locally looking for additional qashqai rugs but I believe the "antique" ones I have been shown are not. Can you help me with some telltale signs that will help me decipher the age in relation to qashqai rugs?
