Need to cut some fringes, what length?

Hi All,

ok, i should not have done this, but a rug talked to me again and told me to buy her/him.

It is what seems to be an Isfahan, signed (Ahmadi as far as the auction house told me, I do recognize the a/d/i of the name, not the rest). It is full of silk, not only highlights but full areas in different colours (pink, light blue and others). Find that a bit strange for Isfahans. Rather fine, about 750'000 kpsm.

The rug is new and still has very long fringes, especially on the side it was cut down but also the side with the signature is quite long. What kind of length is the most practical? Obviously I want to have nice fringes, but also do not want to vacuum them up and keep them looking nice as long as possible.

It s a beautiful rug and probably quite expensive. I would not cut the fringes at all. Vacuum cleaners are murder on rugs. Whatever length you might cut them to, they will still get destroyed by a vacuum. That is my opinion. Again, beautiful rug.

hi cuzinbruce,

not a cheap rug, but then i was almost sure it was used as they advertised it as 'little wear'. Being an auction house, I thought that meant in very good, perhaps excellent condition and was not expecting it to be completely new.
anyway, am glad you like it too!
how would I then go about cleaning the dust out of the rug? just shake it from time to time outside? I can roll it up while vacuuming the room, do not see a problem with that. just a bit unpractical...
and the fringes on one side are getting tangled all the time and do not look nice then, they are about 20-25cm / 8-10 inches long.

Hi,
I am not the foremost expert about these things. And it is a big rug so taking it outside is a chore. But when I do take them outside, I use an old fashioned rug beater against the backside of the rug. The couple I have are 2 1/2 - 3 feet long, a handle with some wires that are twisted into a rosette at the end, maybe 8" diameter. I can put up an image if you need one. With the rug hanging from something, I whack the backside until the dust stops coming out. Then I vacuum with an upholstery nozzle. It is the rotary beaters in household vacuums that do the damage. Mostly I do this before I wash one. (I use the shop vacuum to suck out the rinse water too. Speeds up drying.) In the house, especially with a big rug,. I would use an upholstery nozzle on the rug. If you do use an upright vacuum on one, I have gotten the fringes out of the way, maybe put them under the rug, then lifted the vacuum and set it on the pile. Keep the vacuum away from the edges and fringe and it will work if you are careful. Maybe someone more expert than me can help with some of this, but that is my experience.

Hi Bruce,

thanks a lot for your advice, will follow your guidelines and see if it is ok. being a fine rug means that it is a lighter than the normal ones, so should not be a big deal to clean it outside from time to time even if it measures around 205x310cm.

Redo, I would cut the fringes to 2 or 3 finger diameter lenght following the kilim.
