Help me with this one please on age and Sarouk family type.I think that this is 1910. Also that it is after the Mohajaran design but into the Surouk design phase. It is painted, but not bleached prior to painting. Notice the UnAmerican design, mordant brown, and unusual medallion with interesting browns and greens. From an estate sale where there were quite a few Sarouks, but this was in the best condition. A fringe has been sewn on both ends. What do you guys think? Size is runner dimension...31.25" by 65"

I think it's a 50s or 60s Jozan Malayer. Most of the dyes appear to be chemical. But not a bad piece

Thankyou for your analysis. I would like to understand it better. I have a couple of questions... Malayers are single wefted and use the turkish knot. The back of this one looks Sarouk, is double wefted and has a Persain Knot. What would make this a Malayer and a Jozan? Is it based on the design primarily? Also, it appears to be painted. Was the painting continued into the 50's and 60's? Question on the design... it has angular flowers like the early 20th century rugs and it has mordant brown dyes. This is why I thought it was an earlier rug. Trying to understand this-- can you help me??? Thank you for your help Sharafi.

Jozan is a town in the Malayer area. The weaving is different to Malayer. In fact if you look at the weaving Tieme in the same area it is even closer to Saruk. The design and mainly from what I can see from the back. Don't forget I am only looking at images and with rugs ideally you want to inspect them close up. But the back of a Jozan probably lends itself more to Mohajeran but it is different. The fact that some natural dyes are used in a rug doesn't mean that chemical dyes would not have been used as well. Brown is a relatively easier colour to obtain naturally and it all depends what the weaver had available at the time of dying the wool or the place that the wool was bought from. There are no hard and fast rules in the world of rug weaving because it is done by humans and materials found in nature. That is what makes it such a fascinating subject and also why you will not find one person that knows it all. The other colours and the back suggest the date that I mentioned to me. If it was a 1900 or 1920 piece then primarily I think the design would have been different. The colours would have been different and the the back would have been different.
