Dear All,

I know that this is not really a post on rug identification, but am still trying to understand more on rugs and was hoping you guys could help.
I have found this rug that I do like, but have no idea why the estimate on it is so high. Here is the link:

https://www.bukowskis.co...otachem-202-5-x-136-5-cm

Are these antique silk Kashan rugs really that valuable (approx. $20'000), even if not in tiptop condition?

Other question I have. What about new high quality Kashan rugs? I am surfing the web quite a lot to find new rugs I like, but am very very rarely seeing new Kashan rugs that look of very high quality. Is that just that I do not look well enough or are most new Kashan rugs of more ‘commercial quality’? I have after quite some searching found one site that seems to have new Kashans that look of excellent quality, in Japan:

http://www.persian-farsh.com/ペルシャ絨毯/kashan-カシャーン/

Would be great to have some feedback on the antique Kashan and new, high quality production Kashans from the experts here.

Thanks in advance

Well - antique Kashan silk rugs are available starting around USD 4000.00 and easily can go to USD 25.000 on auctions in the size of the rug you asked about. Price as always depends on condition and demand. Here some prices from Christies Sales:

New rugs from Iran are becoming less and less since price of labour is risisng and production is down. It makes no more sence to produce commercial rugs since these are out of demand on western markets. High end qualities are sold to other markets as South Asia, China and Arabic countries.

Japanese customers prefer exquisit quality in small sizes due to small rooms. These rugs usually don´t show up in western markets since here no one is willing to pay the price for these fantastic quality rugs.

With any work of art its condition, rarity and provenance. To start of with you are highly unlikely to find another silk Mohtasham Kashan like that. The colour combination is a bit different. Mohtasham is a well recognised master weaver, the name alone demands a premium.

With the new ones you can always have another one made and if the are made to the same overall standard of a Mohtasham then you have to wait another 60 years before the colours and dyes develop and mature to the same quality of an antique piece.

So overall antique rugs in general are highly undervalued especially when you consider, as KAD says they are not being replaced with new ones as such.

Thanks KAD and Sharafi for your insightful information.

By now, I am certainly not the one who does not see the value of these rugs, old or new. Rugs really combine arts with craftsmanship in a rather unique way. Am also very happy to hear that the high-end iranian rugs are still very much in demand in some countries. Perhaps some day people in western countries will be fed up with all the mass-produced things that are bought for short term use and will go back to buying items that are of high quality and hand made. I certainly find it more rewarding, even if it hurts your wallet more initially.
Must be fascinating to see these antique rugs and how they are coming alive when you look at them. Last item that I posted on this forum (the antique Isfahan) was sold for the equivalent of two fine dining experiences for two, quite ridiculous I find. And hope that new, high end Kashans (or Kermans) will make a comeback in our countries!

Thanks again for your info
