Hi Everyone,
I recently (and impulsively) bought two rugs. I'm hoping to get your feedback on what you think they are and how much they are worth. Both are around 4 X 6. They both have some damages that need to be repaired (small holes/tears). One estimate I got said it would cost $100 to repair the Hamadan rug and $300 to repair the Tabriz. I'm not sure if it is worth doing or if I would get a return on that investment if I chose to sell them. Thanks for any help!

Your Tabriz appears to have lost the outer guard border. It is a good antique piece. Can't see where it needs work so cannot comment on the cost of repair or the piece so much from the one image you have posted. There is no image of the back.

Your Hamedan, which I think is from Taleghan which comes under Hamedan is a good piece. Again with regard to cost of repair the same as above.

Hi Rosster,
Both are beautiful rugs and the 'Hamadan's colors have aged beautifully. I think the Hamadan is a Talaghan from the 1940's. I have a very similar one, but not in as good condition. I cannot see from your picture how much repair is needed for this rug. $100 seems very low. Be sure to have a professional repair your rug correctly. Do not let anyone machine serge fringes onto your rug or machine serge repairs onto the sides. The machine stich will bite into the rug's foundation and cut the foundation..This type of repair also lessens the value of your rug. Make sure all repairs are made by hand. Get your rugs properly end secured and they will last a long time. These repairs are important to keep the knots from rolling off.

Thank you both so much for your feedback! I have uploaded pictures of the backs of each rug along with pictures showing their problem areas. I've included my hand in each picture so you get a sense of how big the areas are.

As you can see, the Talaghan has 3 tears/holes in the same area. I was told it would cost $100 to secure them.

The Tabriz has numerous wear spots/holes that need securing. I was told it would cost $300 to do so. Note: I would not be completely restoring the large burn spot bur rather just securing the foundation so it will not damage further. I was told it would be very costly to restore it.

Do these repairs seem worth doing? In other words, if I tried to sell them online, would I be likely to make back the money I spent on the repairs or would I be better off selling them as is?

Thanks for any advice! I really appreciate it.

Well - to me it makes no sence to repair the holes in the Hamadan and leave the rest. I agree with cartona that $100 seems very low. It needs to get the frnges secured, the long sides (Shirazi) need to be repaired, the holes need to be fixed. Probably it needs to be washed and have a new moth protection. If you want to keep the rug for you it might make sence to have all this professionally done and enjoy the rug for years. If you want to sell it - don´t do anything on the rug. You will not get the cost in return.

Same problem with the Tabriz - it will be quite expensive to fix the damages and you will not get the cost in return.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll hold off fixing them if I plan to sell them. Does anyone have any idea as to what I might could get for them if listed online?
