Hi everyone,

This is a rug that is auctioned off over the next week. Size 210 x 360 cm (7 x 12). Really love its colors and color combination and wanted to start bidding.

-) What is a piece like this worth, given its condition? Am not an expert, but the rug does not look very old. Why are there no fringes anymore? Could that mean that the rug has quality issues?
-) As you can see, it is dirty and does not have fringes anymore. If I were to buy it, I would want it cleaned and would want the fringes restored. How much would that cost approximately?
-) Would any of the rug dealers on this site be able to help me with this restoration (rug is in Europe)? This because I do not think that I will find someone here in Perth (Australia) who would be able to do that.

Thanks for your help

Hi
At a guess i would say its Tabriz (i am not to good with city rugs)
its not old maybe 1960/70 maybe even later
forget getting the fringe done by the signature it would cost a lot
In england you would pay on ebay about £200.00 max for the rug
good luck if you bid in the auction

Hi Nick,

thanks a lot for your reply. I would buy it right away for 200 pounds!
Did some research on the signature by just comparing. it says (i believe), Iran, Isfahan, and then the name of the weaver, a name that ends with ri/ry, but is not one of the names that i found (Davari, Enteshari, Mamouri). So would be great to know who the weaver is and if it is a known name.
Like I said, I really like the colours, there are rather few Isfahans on the internet that do not have red as a main colour, and really like the combination of sky blue with yellow/gold/beige.
Foundation should be silk, not making the repair any cheaper I guess.

It is a very pretty Isfehan and it should be woven on silk with silk highlights. I would not worry about the fringes too much, as long as they have stop they will be ok. To put new fringes on to this rug in a proper way, because it is silk it will cost at least £800 and more likely more than that. The signature is Iran Isfehan Nasrullah Heidari. I think even if you buy this for £2000 you have got a very good price, as in shop, cleaned up and all works done it will cost you upwards of £9000 to buy this. The cleaning will be around £45 per square meter.

Sharafi,

Thanks for your reply and all the information (need to work on these alphabets). If i bought it for 2000 pounds it would be the most expensive rug so far in my short rug-buying career. i do like it though, also how they incorporated the birds into the arabesque design, quite ingenious.

Thanks for your discussion on repair costs, that would mean an extra 1200-1500 pounds.

Let's see what happens with the auction price.

Hi All,

Just got the rug I bid on a while back. It was auctioned off in Berlin and then went to Bavaria to KAD for a good wash and repair.
I decided to have the fringes repaired. I obviously know that it does not increase the value of the rug at all, but because we will be having this rug in our house for a long time, having fringes on it just makes for a nicer overall look.
Cleaning was rather difficult, the rug had quite a few areas with color run together with dirt spots. It is now almost spotless and looks beautiful. Good news was also that it had no damage to the pile and border with the pile at almost even height throughout.
The rug’s wool is beautifully soft. Indeed, the rug it replaces (a nice and fine one) feels a bit like a doormat in comparison…
It has about 8 Million knots in total, 1-1.2 Million knots per square meter (625-730 kpsi).
Because of a funny coincidence, the rug should be feeling perfectly at home where it is. When we bought the house some years ago, we had the flooring replaced with the generously sized (3’ x 5’) grey marble/limestone tiles shown in the photos. The only quarries in the world for this stone, called Pietra Grey, can be found just outside Isfahan!

Hello Redo,
Wow!! Just a gorgeous rug and love it when someone decides to restore a wonderful rug.
It gives me an incentive to price out getting a pictorial Isfahan with similar issues (with 676 kpsi, silk warp, wool with silk highlights) restored also, but mine is not signed and your signed Isfahan has inherent, greater value. I will post in another Topic. Thanks for sharing!!!

Hi Cartona,

Happy you like it too, thanks for your thumbs up. Looking forward to your upcoming topic!
I don't know if the signature puts more value on my rug as I do not know if anyone cares about this particular weaver? Are you saying that buyers do not care too much about who the weaver was but pay premium anyway because it has a signature on it?

Lovely to hear that you went for it and it has turned out so wonderfully. You are obviously brave and you are reaping the rewards. It seems as if KAD has done a very good professional job on it. Enjoy it.

Thank you all for your nice comments:

Sharafi; yes, I was eating my fingernails after I had bought it and before receiving news (condition report on the rug) from KAD!
Nick; don't worry, if I knew a fraction of what you know on rugs I would be feeling very proud of myself. Am working on improving, but see that it will take years. Might have to buy some books next and study the subject.

For the restoration job, I did not tell you that the rug has cotton weft. New additions are also a mix. What I particularly like is how KAD chose a slightly off-white/bronze colour for the fringes. It is really blending in beautifully with the vintage look of the rug.

Joseph; We will do our best to enjoy it as long as we can and then a next generation will hopefully do the same.

greetings from down under
