Hi All,

This is a rug I bought recently at an ebay auction from a private seller. Was advertised as oriental rug, very fine. I bought it thinking it could be an isfahan. really liked the colours and even more the design, with special symmetry.

is this an isfahan?
How old is the rug?
Is there a name to these designs with symmetry like that of right and left hand?
Are these rugs then normally woven in pairs, that is a right hand and a left hand?
there should be a picture of the fringes. the fringes on one side are coming in pairs and are not 'open'. is that normal?

would be great to hear from you

Sorry, forgot to mention: dimensions are 190 x 110 cm (75 x 43 inches). wool with silk on silk foundation (or so it appears).

You bought a very beautiful persian isfahan rug of very good quality. It has a nice asymetric design. These rugs are usually not made in pairs, but it does happen. It was made within the lasr 20 years.

Thanks KAD for the info, really happy that it is a persian Isfahan and happy that you like it!

With my half knowledge from the internet you can imagine that buying used rugs on ebay is a bit of a lottery. Interesting about the asymmetric design not necessarily coming in pairs, would think it would look really special in the right environment.
As a non-rug collector, I also liked the fact that there was no flashy signature on the rug, some of the Isfahans I saw on the internet have signatures you can not miss, a bit like these T-shirts reading Armani or Boss or Calvin Klein in big letters...
Some months ago, I had found an Isfahan at an auction I really liked in terms of colours, but stopped short of the winning bid (which went quite high in the last day) just because I did not like the signature part of the rug. After not winning the rug, I did some internet research and saw that it seemed to be a collectible rug, so would not have won the bid anyway.
