Hi,

Am new to this forum and my interest in traditional rugs is quite recent. I started when we moved to a new house some years ago and my wife and I thought we should buy some traditional looking rugs.

Anyway, this one is a rug that was sold as persian Nain from the 1970s. Dimensions are approx. 57 x 78 cm (without fringes). As I have been looking to find information about it, I have read that Nains with red border might be older and are called Nain Tudeshk?

-) Do you have any idea about the age of the rug? Is it a Nain at all?

-) And for something that has little to do with rugs. Does Tudeshk mean anything in Persian?
In some modern-day European languages, the same word means ‘german’. For example, a ‘german’ in my mother tongue (rumantsch, a swiss language that is latin-based) is called a ‘tudestg’ (approximate English pronunciation too-desh-tch). A ‘german’ in italian is called a ‘tedesco’. Seems to go back to a word in old german that means ‘of the people’.

Would be great to get some feedback on the rug and on the etymology of the word Tudeshk…

Best regards from down under

PS: Sorry for the pictures that are not super, hope they are of good enough quality to evaluate the rug?

If the fringes are silk, which is difficult to tell but appear to be in the photo, then it is an Isfehan, otherwise I think you are right it is a Tudeshk Nain, around the 1960s.

Hi Sharafi and Nick,

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Fringes are cotton. Seems to mean that it is Nain? According to wikipedia, Tudeshk is a village close by. Are old Nains called that way because they were made there? If yes, is that village still making rugs?

Tudeshk is a village near the city of Nain. It is a beautiful Tudeshk in great condition and typical color sheme. The Nain designs originate in traditional Isfahan designs but with time Nain rugs received an own style. The rug pictured has a design that is very close to Isfahan. Agree with Sharafi about age.

Thanks KAD for your nice comments.

Buying rugs on a budget and in Australia means that we normally buy them online from overseas, which is always a bit risky. And being new to rugs but still wanting what we think are nice looking, hand knotted rugs is doubling the risk.

This website is great for knowledge and am really happy to have found it. It is great to hear from experts what these rugs are.

We really like this small Nain rug and indeed, we like the color combinations of Nains in general and have bought 3 floor rugs that were sold as Nains. Now that I went through this website I understand that there are cheaper copies of Nain rugs. I might indeed ask the experts for their opinion on what we bought here in terms of Nain-style rugs, just to understand if what we bought is ok.

By now, we are always shipping the rugs express, which obviously adds some cost when in Australia. Just wanted to show you what can happen to a rug that is shipped economy to Australia from Europe, then gets lost somewhere and turns up 4 months later. This was meant to be an Isfahan rug, unfortunately it has found its resting place in a landfill here in Perth.

To come back to the post, anyone with an idea what Tudeshk means?
