I saw this at an auction online and I bought it. The abrash in the salmon medallion and the vein-like tendrils that wander across the medallion caught my eye. The wool is closely shorn, extremely soft, with knot count about 256+.looks like fugitive red dye in the spandrels with no bleeding in the front. What type and how old??? It measures 45" by 63" with a meandering Josan border. Running my hands across the pile, it appears to be depressed to the right. So, a Persian knot, depressed to the right, high knot count, salmon, abrashed medallion, midnight blue fill...what's the verdict please.
Thanks a lot.

It is an impressive Jozan Malayer. I think it is older than it looks. I think it is 1900. In an auction it should bring at least $800.

Very nice rug, Jozan with beautiful colors. Agree with Sharafiandco about age.

Questions: All of the literature cites Josan (Malayer or Sarouk) had turkish knots, but double wefted as Sarouk.is it a good test to determine the type of knot and whether it is depressed to left or right by running your hand across the pile vertically and horizontally? I realize this rug has the Josan design..medallion serrated, sprandrels, and meandering Josan border, but what about the weave??? Does design trump weave for Josan? I believe this rug has a Persian knot. Trying to figure this out.Can Josan ' s have Persian knots?
Thanks all,

Literature is not always right. I have Jozans with tukish knot, with persian left open and one with persian knot right open. If you open the pile and look at the knots you can see it most of the time even if it is depressed.

Thank you both, KAD and Sharafi. In fact, Sharafi was right about the final auction cost. I won the rug for $650, but after premium and shipping costs it ended up costing me $799. KAD, I guess nothing beats experience...trying to discern rugs by literature and hands-on, nothing beats hands-on. I have one other Josan I really like, but after seeing this one, it looks more like a Toisarkan. So, you guys are really good!!! It's going up on my wall.
Thanks again.
