Saw this one on Craigslist. The seller sent me a pic of the back of the rug. Can you help me identify what it is?? Is it a Bessarabian (sp?), Bulgarian. Not sure . Any help is appreciated. I meant to add-- the borders look non-Persian to me, but the field looks interesting???
Third time around-- Now I think it is Indian....

As soon as I saw the border, I thought it was a sarouk....

That kind of a border is very common in sarouk rugs....but I have no idea. Just throwing it out there!

Here are more pictures of the rug from the seller. I am scheduled to see it tomorrow. The additional pictures make me think it is Persian, but I don't know for sure what it is.

possible sarouk although maybe kazvin. 1980's persian like this is difficult to ascertain exactly where for US market since most that made it to the states from this era are finer pieces like qom, or super low grade even gabbeh for example. Mid grade commercial types didnt make it into retail rug stores much because of international relation issues. watch out for any concealed moth damage on back, saw a few nibble marks in one pic

Thanks all for your feedback.. So this is 1980's and possibly Saruk, Kasvin, or Qom?..
Rug Pro would this be considered a finer piece or a commercial medium grade piece?
Thanks so much for the information of this piece. The seller is asking $1500. It measures 11'9" by 8'4"

I saw the rug this morning and I still don't know what it is. Overall it was not that pleasing to look at. I read up on the Kasvin, Hamadan town, Alvand carpet in A. Cecil Edwards book and looked for the 'fabric' structure he describes for these carpets per his specifications: 1) turkish knot, 2) double wefted, 3) 10 by 11 knot per inch, 4) Bijar type structure, 5) very thick lustrous wool, 6) 16th century overall vase and floral design, 7) use of German/ Swiss chemical dyes initially, then natural dyes later. This carpet did not live up to all of this criteria. Perhaps this is how this carpet has evolved over the past few decades. I did not purchase. Because of the RugRag, backed up by some resources es, I was able to make an informed decision. Rugrag rocks! !!

Attached are some additional pics I took. I'm still not impressed with this rug..1) what about the colors..they don't appear to be vegetable dyed and the color combination just doesn't look Sarouk?? 2) attached are additional pics I took. It doesn't appear to be that fine to me.. 3) it is double wefted, so that rules it out as a Kazvin. If this is a Sarouk (1980's), I don't think we see that many of this type in the US.

I'd say it was a fairly recent and pretty commercial grade Sarouk. Looks nice at a distance in the image but may be different in real life.
