Hello~ I picked up this rug at an estate sale today. It was just rumpled up in a corner. Something about it caught my interest. Although it seems to be worn and has a few areas that need repair, I spent 40 dollars on it... I know pennies but when you don't know what something is go as cheap as possible...lol. The size is 112 X 72. It seems to have area of worn pile along with woven areas without pile. The center medallion is what drew my attention. It has a Lion in the center surrounded by other animals. Is this rug old or made to look old? Any idea on age or type would be appreciated... everyone here has such amazing advice and knowledge~ your help is invaluable!

That's great to hear you purchased a pass!

You did well on this rug. It's in rough shape, but this type is hardly ever found with meaningful pile. It appears to be a silk kayseri from 1910, 1920's, probably faux silk. The only thing that has me a little puzzled is the purple wefting, although will see what others have to say. The problem with these is the thread would invariably dry and break, which would leave no pile after many years. They also tend to be very sensitive to staining. This style of worn out carpet is "in", so the value would mostly be decorative, and it is a very decorative rug with great character. Another note is the size is larger than most of these are found - average is usually around 4x6

Thank you RugPro for the information. I would have never come close to figuring it out on my own! I see what you mean about the pile... it seems to have lost a large percentage. What would faux silk be made of? I just assumed it was wool from the smell. Not the same wool smell as some of my newer rugs, but a heavier, sweet smell...could this faux silk be made of another type of aninmal hair? I really like this rug and plan on hanging it. What would you advise about cleaning? it is very dirty. If I have it cleaned, could it destroy what is left of the pile? Any advise is appreciated!

What an interesting piece. It almost looks like a tapestry looking at the large sections with lost pile and looking at the section with the small hole, the unraveling yarn looks like wool???

[On a closer look at the back of the rug,near the hole, I can see 2 knot nodes, so it's not a tapestry and it appears that there is both cotton and wool in the knot pile. The knots on the back which are blue and red are shiny and there are some knots which appear to be disintegrating like they are cotton. Does this rug have a mixture of both cotton and wool in the pile?? There is also a 3 cord selvage-- which you often find on the Turkish Hereke, but from its use of cotton, as RugPro said, it is probably a Turkish Kayseri. ]

I did a burn test a bit ago comparing it to a pull from a all wool carpet. I did a piece of fringe as well as a knot from the damaged area... It seemed to all burn like cotton and not like the wool from my other rug. It didn't melt or run from the flame, as I would expect from a viscous material. I did not pull a knot from the area that has pile. On closer inspection it seems to be sculptured along border lines. Tomorrow I will try the test pulling a piece from the area with pile. I really appreciate any and all help identifying this rug!

We normally do not permit outbound linking, although the enclosed sample is somewhat close to your carpet. I do see the wear in your rug may be a bit more uneven. http://www.jhminassian.com/antique-silk-turkish-2 Also, certainly not implying the value range would apply

Thanks RugPro for the example. I see a resemblance. The wear on my rug is uneven, unfortunately the center and medallion are the most worn. I also know the value range for my rug would be completely different because of wear, damage & dirt... but hey, I only have $40 invested thus far :~) Do you think this rug merits repairs & professional cleaning? I know it will never be used as a rug again.. but I would love to see it hanging!
