Hi all. I am new to this field and our apartment has a long hallway. This rug, which is 12 feet long and 30 inches wide, would fit perfectly. Aesthetically it seems wonderful but I have no idea if it's really what it purports to be (a handmade Afghan turkmen bokhara wool rug). Can you knowledgeable folks tell me if this is a rug of decent quality, if it is what I've been told it is, and what I should pay for it? I've attached seven photographs. As I said, we like it very much but I'd feel more comfortable getting some expert opinions. I'd be very grateful. Many thanks!

It's a nice rug, will service for many years - they're relatively common, the style is khal mohamadi. Value varies. Where did you purchase? Online? In store?

Thanks so much for that; it's very encouraging. The seller is in Pakistan and wants around $700 including shipping. Does this seem commensurate with its value? One problem is that it's just the tiniest bit too long for our hallway, so he's agreed to remove the two inches of kilim at each end and re-attach fringes. Since these are common rugs, I am assuming this would not be tantamount to vandalism. Can this kind of alteration be done in a way that maintains the durability and aesthetics of the rug? By the way, thanks for that spot-on identification. You know your stuff! I see that (apparently) new versions of this rug, slightly different of course, are available on amazon in various useful gradations of size, all supposedly hand-knotted:

Are these khal mohammedi notably inferior to what I am being offered by the merchant in Pakistan? He's said the one he's offering is perhaps 25 years old. Is that a virtue?

Nice rug, price is ok. I think it is more a Kargai quality than a Khal Mohammadi.

KAD is probably right, as I noted style is similar Khal Mohammadi but that does not mean it is. It appears a bit courser - the point is if you like the rug, you should go with it. As for reducing the fringes make sure to chalk it out first so you're both on the same wavelength. This is not a process that can easily be reversed. And relating to value, on this carpet it's generally decorative and most do not prefer the kilim end anyway. Make it yours!

Thanks to both of you for those excellent responses. We will probably go ahead and do it. But just to clarify: do you consider it better to buy this one, perhaps 25 yrs old, from Pakistan than what I imagine is the new one offered on Amazon that is very similar in design and color? Again, thanks!
