Hi today at an auction I purchase a Hand Knotted Combination Flat and Pile Weave Rug. Russian. 109" x 78". Or at least that is how it was listed in the catalog. I'm not at all certain this is correct. Its a beautiful rug in excellent condition, but I'd really like to confirm what I bought. It was also listed as antique. Can anyone help identify this rug?

Thank you both for the information. I'm curious as to how you determined age? Beside the obvious lack of wear, would the color of the rugs center date it as new? Most of this type of rug I find online listed as semi-antique, are very dark. Also, is there any value in this rug besides decorative value? I'm disappointed that the auction house was so far off. I was doubtful from the beginning, but this is a very reputable high end auction house. I guess buying from auction is a learning experience!

How to tell the age ultimately comes from experience and seeing a large number of rugs, because however I explain why it is new you would have to have seen and compared it with an old one. In other words you would need some sort of comparison and scale. But with this one the close up of the wool is clear that it has not been used much and is not of much age. Apart from the fact that the colours and designs further suggest this. There are many number of factors involved in telling the age. The condition of the wool, colours, design are the three most important ones.
