It is certainly a very nice piece with unusual colours. I don't know if this piece does have a provenance because it does not look more than 30 years old to me. But it is not that easy to tell from just photos. Anyway a very nice piece

Hi Sharafi,
When the forum was down, Rug Pro helped me identity it as an Ahar from the Heriz region, so i am sure it's in the Heriz family from the Ahar region. The rug looks old with overall even wear. I forgot to mention it's size..approximately 13 by 10 feet. Sponge Bongo had a similar one they dated to 1940, so I was wondering if this Ahar Heriz was older. These Ahar's are unusual since the villagers were able to create the curvilear design using the Turkish knot...according to Peter Stone's book. There are not many of these around so I was wondering how to tell the age. Thanks for all your replies.

Hi

there are a number of factors to take into account when you want to estimate the age. Obviously design and colour are sometimes a good indicator. The way the colours have changed and matured. The back of the rug is also a very good indicator which is why the best way is to see and feel the rug. The way the wool feels how smooth it is how smooth the back is. The fringes can also be an indicator of age. More than anything in rug estimating the age is a skill that is as a result of experience and having seen a large number of rugs. The best way to learn is to work for a good carpet dealer that has a large business.
