This measures @6 by 10 feet. It is very ush/ soft, wool with silk highlights.it looks newer and may be imitating a Tabriz??? It very heavy. It's got elements of Kashmar and Tabriz to me. Am I looking at a PAK or Indian rug. Kpsi is @ 350. How old and where is it made? Thanks!!

So would this be called a Srinagar Kashmiri rug? One of my resources (Peter Stone) identifies these wool/ silk high knot count Indian rugs as Srinagars. Would you say that the dead give away is the mixture of Persian designs, the fringe, the color of the wool dyes and the the way the selvedge is finished into the fringe? I know this takes a trained eye to instinctively sniff these out, but I was wondering if you could elaborate a bit on what the major tell tale signs are?? I picked this up in a resale shop for very little. Thanks!!

This is a production piece and could have been woven in many areas in India. The Srinagar Kashmiri that you mention I am not familiar with but it could refer to the Kashmir silk production in that area. As you say to a great extend recognising rugs has a lot to do with experience, which you mainly gain by seeing a large number of them and of course reading about them. To me each handmade rug has a certain character. Also to me the better woven ones (not necessarily the finer ones) have more character. That was the first thing that I noticed with this rug. Also the design clearly was a copy with elements introduced. The fringes and the way the wool appeared in the photo. The colour combination.
