It is a Saruk not a bad quality. The blue dye is not very good.

Sharafi,
Can you tell me how old it is -- also the bad blue dye it has--- is it due to the dye used? Is it a candidate for color runs? Are dye colors like this due to the dye used-- chemical??? how it it was dyed??? The seller wants $1500 for this one-- is this a fair price. I am looking for a replacement rug for my dining room... is the Mahallat rug in my other post a better piece than this Saruk??

Thanks a lot!

It seems to be about 30 years old. I think the blue is an aniline dye and they do have a tendency to run when exposed to water and when washed they turn into a dull grey. Again if I am right that it is an aniline dye. I think you would have to pay more than $1500 in a shop. However, private sale because of the dye I personally would have been more comfortable if I could get it for under a $1000.

The Mahallat is not as fine as this rug but again personally for me it is a much better value for money rug. But it should be half the price of this.

Sharafi,

Thank you very much. I have seen rugs with a washed out, dull blue color... now I think I know why.
My education continues...

One more detail about this Saruk. The tag says the rug is made of wool and silk. Sorry to ask you about this now, but does this change any of your advice about this rug???? I'm trying to decide if I should see the rug. The seller has to drive it up from Ohio to Michigan for me to see it. It is on her way to her home in Michigan so we can we meet in a convenient place. Isn't it unusual for a Saruk to have wool and silk in the pile??

This rug appears to be of a very coarse quality. I don't know that that's horrible, but you may find it to not be of the character of the rugs you normally like when you see it in person.
