Hi Folks,

New to the forum so; GREETINGS, tashi delek, assalam alaikum!

I would please like to have the attached bag pair identified as to,
1) approx how old
2) who / what tribe could have made them
3) how many knots per sq inch
4) natural or chemical dyes
Size of each bag approx 12" x 20". They were purchased in Afghanistan in March, 1979.

Pic 1 shows both bags and the 'back' of one bag. Pic 1a is one square inch on back of rug.

The other pic title "is this script" is what is inside the small whitish section just below the black line between the two bags. Is this script / writing? If so can anyone decipher it?

Thanks in advance!

PS. I have more to come but rather than put all in one post will separate so as not to overly confuse things.

Kay

Again, thanks Cartona.

Found the below in a book (Carpet Magic) with a very similar style motif in the centre field.

Would this make what is in the previous maybe a Salor weaving then?

Elsewhere someone said "........... I suppose Ersari again makes sense (the Ersari are kind of famous for using all the other tribes design). But if the knots are “open left” you could perhaps ague that it could be a late Salor though late Salors kind of doesn’t exist (the tribe being dissolved in pre-russian 19th)".

Great research... the Salar tribe is one of the Baluch tribes and there are other rug weaving sub tribes that have similar designs, colors, structure. etc.
As you know, the Baluch are in the north eastern part of Iran and neighboring Afghanistan, bordering on the Turkmen border and other contiguous areas. Your rug has the Curled leaf motif that the is borrowed from the neighboring Turkmen. Your other rug had the spilt leaf border typical of the Baluch rugs also and I wonder if the cartouche area you have photographed is a stylized version of the split leaf border. I also think this rug is older than I thought-- perhaps 1910 also. This is my best opinion.

Bad orange? What do you mean by this and where specifically? (As for effecting value, as I no longer have the rugs I am not interested in the value, only the aesthetics).

Also, would you be kind enough to answer my question posed to you on the thread 'Flat Weave ID' as to why you think the Senneh kilim is made only circa the 70's please.

TIA.

Hi
The orange in question is a vivid orange it’s been about since the late 19th century but is not a vegetable dye and not liked by rug collectors
In regard to the Kilim I find them hard to get to a date it was the blue that looked late to me as in 1980s but I could be very wrong
I have one I will put it up now it could be 1940s or 1970s let see if anyone knows

The rug on this thread does have colors that are strong, but I don't know that it means it has no or little collector interest. There are collectors for rugs at every level, and in truth, if everyone chases after the best of the best, they're missing out on the middle. Not saying that these are middle road rugs, they're quite nice IMHO
