Hi. I am new to this forum. I am looking forward to learning more about oriental rugs. I have a rug that I have no info on and would like to get some info/identification/appraisal on it. It was my dad's but he got it as part of a home purchase so he has no info on it either. I don't think it's antique but what I really would like to know is whether or not it's hand knotted or machine made. I am hoping that someone here might be able to help me with this. I'll post some photos. Sorry for the condition of the carpet, I really should have vacuumed it prior to taking the photos. The back is particularly in need of a vacuum. lisa1966 attached the following image(s):

The binding is machined, but the carpet has a slight chance of being hand knotted rug that was subject to machine binding at some point. If it is possible for you to mark on the photo of the back of the carpet which is the length of the rug, and which direction of the width, this would help us to make some determinations

Thank you for your reply! Actually the binding you are seeing is from the width of the carpet and (this may horrify many of you I am sure) but last year when we had the rug professionally cleaned, we had them take the fringe off. So I would imagine that would mean that they had to put a new binding on the ends of the carpet . I will take a photo of the binding on the length of the carpet which would be untouched. I do notice that over the binding on the length of the rug there is a strip of leather stitched over the original binding. Probably to keep the carpet from moving around on the floor? Not sure if this is done during the making of the carpet or something that would have been added at a later date? I'll post the photos in a minute after I resize them.

It is a typical Persian Kashan. The binding I think has been done by hand. The foundation is cotton and the pile is wool. It is all chemical dyes and the shop value for something like this is about $2500. However, at the moment because they are not very much in fashion the auction value is much lower First Floor, unit 9 1 Chandos Road London NW10 6NF UK www.sharafiandco.com
