Rug Pro, Sharaffi and Nick,
Thanks very much for all of your input. All so very interesting. The rug has a cotton warp and is single wefted and as far as I can see is a Persian knot.... I looked up the Roodbar/ Rudbar rugs and found info on the Malik people from the first Millenium BCE and how they were forced to Central Iran. Also saw where the entire village of Roodbar had been destroyed in an earth quake in 1995??? So this rug has interesting history for the Tafresh region which is between the Hamadan to the Qom area, According to Sharaffi it was made post Iranian revolution--around President's Carter's time with the American hostages seige before they were released during President Reagan's administration -- which has certain historical hallmarks also. It may not be the most valuable rug, but it comes from an interesting area and time. I lived in Iran during the Shah's reign with my family when my father was there on a teaching Fulbright at the University of Teheran. We lived in Teheran for over a year, and I still have so many memories of some of these areas. Thanks so much for the help in identifying this rug. BTW, I did not purchase it but told the shop keeper about its value and history who will probably relist it for $400 or less.
