FYI - I can't remember but the seller may have said it was Afshar. Bought several years ago. About 1000 usd.

I do not immediately recognize the character and design as Persian.

RugPro - really? You don't think it is Persian? Any idea what it might be?

Somewhat unsure. This would take a little consideration, and perhaps the signature is clear enough to decipher to someone who may read. This may add insight to city. Very loosely - and don't hold me to it since I have not really thought much about it - the character of style (particularly in the boarder with unconnected design elements) is similar in execution to a lot of lower to mid grade Turkish rugs. Motif has a bit more arbitrary placement than a Persian. I don't know how to say it, there's just less direct co-mingling of design which in conjunction with weave, just doesn't say Persian. Do you have any information on the rug? Do you have a photo of the selvage? The way the fringe is secured is often a Persian kashmiring...

RugPro - I don't have much info on the rug... the dealer told me Persian, possibly Afshar, but he only seemed knowledgeable about the most common types of Persian (commercial Kashan, etc.) He didn't mention how long he had it, etc.
The pile seems to be good quality wool, but I don't think up to the level of kurk wool. The pile is (very?) short - but even all over (so I think it was made that way.
I don't see signs of wear although the fringes are (uniformly) shorter than I normally see.
That is about all the (amateur) observations I have.

Thanks for your help.

Hey mbmb1,

The top part of the signature says Isfahan which you may know is a city in Iran. But the last letter of Isfahan has an extra dot on it which shouldn't be there - this could mean that's its actually not a genuine Persian rug. Poorly woven signatures are often a dead give away.

Cant decipher the name of the weaver - sorry my Farsi sucks!

The design is unusual - normally with Isfahan rugs you have a central medallion surrounded by vines, but you can also get this kind of all-over design too.

Oh yeah, and too me, there is something off about the fringe and the selvage - but I'm not an expert!

Regardless of where is it from, I really like it!

Tracy, thanks for the reply.
I thought the signature was added (not part of design, color not exactly matching, etc.), if it says Isfahan I am sure it was added.

Isfahan and Nain are my favorite Persian rugs so I am kind of familiar with them. I am sure this is not Isfahan. Not the right quality, design and I think most (or all) Isfahan have a silk warp/base.

Cheers

Hey mbmb1,

Looks like you might have found the answer you were looking for :)

But I still love the rug - the strange colour combo and the design!

It's just not coming to me. The selvage looks Persian, but the design just looks to much like a Turkish or other made carpet. This may be one of those carpets when I think of what it is to just revisit. Now seeing the selvage I do think it is more possibly Persian, maybe outside of Bijand or something in that area. That is if it is Persian, I am still not convinced.

I think it is an unusual and pretty rug. The signature is "Isfahan Imrahimpour". I do not think it has been put in afterwards. I do not understand the Isfehan bit as I am almost sure it is a Tabriz. Hey whatever it is, it is a good rug.

The signature was not added, but it is not iranian origin. Copy from Kashmir.

Sharafi & Co. and KAD - thank you for taking the time to share your expertise.

Any thought on market value? Is Kashmir, did I overpay (1000)?

Best regards
