Just brought this home. The size is 8'6"x 11'10". It needs a major cleaning, but before I do it myself I want to make sure Im not going to destroy it! Thanks!

This appears to be a relatively new, well made Indian carpet with Morris style

I guess well made is a good thing! Although I purchased it at an estate sale where they claimed it was purchased 20+ years ago, I had my doubts. I paid 150 so not exactly a big purchase, and I like the arts and crafts style!

Help! On closer inspection after cleaning, I'm wondering what's wrong with some of the wool used. At first I thought after removing years of dirt the carpet was clipped to look sculptured, but that's not the case. Most black areas seem to have lost their pile? Will the entire carpet do this eventually? Any advice? Can the loss be stopped? Or is rug a lost cause?

here are a few more pics. The bottom (darker side) seems to be the worst. The other parts of the rug are randomly suffering as well but not to the same extent. The top right hand corner where it was under furniture seems to be the only place its not noticeable. Any help or advice is much appreciated! After 10 hours of carefully cleaning this rug I would hate to let it fall apart!

I don't think it will fall apart, although based on your descriptions and photos it could be the rug suffered some oxidation perhaps due to light / UV, perhaps acid from dye, or a combination of both may be recessing the pile. These are factors that are hard to determine from photos. The rug does appear to be well made, it has character of good construction based on images, and some finishing details that appear consistent with better type of production. However, that does not necessarily mean it was well cared for, or the rug is not susceptible to above average wear/tear.

I've tried to do some research online about this but most seem to talk about black/brown natural dyes. I assume since you advised that it was newer it would be synthetic dye. Are synthetic dyes corrosive to wool in black as well? The other colors seem to show only normal wear. Is there anything that can be done to slow the process besides regular care and avoiding UV light?
