Not sure. Can you have a look at this and tell me what you think. She put a deposit on it.

It is a very pretty carpet. I don't think it is a Jozan. However, personally I am finding it difficult to tell from these photos, which are very good. If you can post another picture of the back showing more of it and the edge please. I have a feeling it's not a Farahan either.

dargezine rug maybe - second hand used is not super high value, but they do tend to be better of the Hamadan.

RugPro and Sharafi and Co.
Thank you for all your expert advise--- I just posted another pic of the rug's reverse my daughter took with her finger to give some perspective. I have not seen it. What distinguishing characteristics make this a She put $100 deposit on it. Is it worth the $700 the seller wants? They claimed to have paid $1400 for it.
Can you tell me how old this rug is and if the price of $700 is a good price-- auction or retail????. Thanks a lot!!!

I agree with Sharafi, and Nick has a good point there about Bakhtiari. There's a really good book on the woven structures of single wefted carpets and how to distinguish the different areas. When I remember the title I will pass it on. Anyway, I now try to provide information on rugs as opposed to value - it takes a lot of consideration to figure value ranges.

It sounds like after joining the forum you may be buying for personal and perhaps collection maybe resale? The only recommendation I can make is to buy where you feel comfortable. If someone paid 1500 retail and they can show documents to support that, but they have enjoyed the rug in-home for the last 10 years and are trying to sell it in used condition with wear and in need of servicing, they need to be realistic about their pricing. For high end rugs, prices have maintained fairly well. However, for commercial and mediocre rugs, values in my opinion are quite depreciated.

Bottom line - not speaking to this rug, but carpets and purchasing in general - If the 1500 rug needs 250 in servicing and cleaning, it doesn't make sense for the rug to be priced at $1250. Also remember, the buyer has enjoyed the carpet for many years which means it's subject to wear and environmental factors. Often in cleaning, unseen cosmetic anomalies can also appear and the pile may show more recessed or the wear or true condition be more apparent. Colors may run, perhaps some white knots show through, or the rigors of washing a rug may loosen selvages or overcasting. Whoever buys the rug is assuming risk of investment. When purchasing a rug in need of a wash (and all rugs should be washed) there is yet another risk. The big question is - where do you feel comfortable making an investment? Is the purchase part of a business model, or are you a collector and are willing to pay close or at retail for the right piece?

As a last note, this rug does appear to have the character of some of the better in the type. Meaning, while not a collector piece, it appears to be an above average example for the type.

Thank you all for helping me identify this rug and I apologize for the delay in my response. We have had some severe weather in the Midwest with power outages off and on. We are also close to Canada and I can't always get strong (or any signals) on my Android phone at times. In fact I started several responses and the line dropped and I lost them. So I am posting a reply from my laptop.

First of all, the forum has educated me over the past 6 months on the science, history, art, culture and geo-political impact on hand knotted rugs where I am beginning to find out what I don't know. I have lots of books and they help, but nothing beats actual contact with a rug. I see them differently now and have the hunger to find out more and to collect better pieces.

When Nick suggested the rug was a Baktiari.. I thought.. yeah, that's probably what it is and researched single blue wefted rugs and Baktiari’s . The perspective that RugPro just provided on collecting and buying hand knotted rugs resonates with me in understanding what I am trying to do. I retired last year from management in automotive analytical marketing ( you know customer profiling, regression analysis, statistical predictive models) and rugs have become my passion. .. family friends and neighbors all know this and come to me for advice.

I joined the forum to find out more about the rugs we have been collecting over the past 30 years and I have been on a sharp learning curve. In fact before joining the forum I paid for a remote appraisal (via pictures) of 3 of my older rugs and was suspicious when the appraiser identified one of my rugs incorrectly and offered to buy it. I had all three rugs vetted on RugRag and know what they all are now.
My daughter joined RugRag and is on the lookout for older carpets also.

I am still trying to develop some expertise in identifying the age of rugs. For example, would you say this Baktiari is from the 1940’s?

Thanks again RugPro, Nick, and Sharafi

To me it seems to be 1960s because of the back and fringes. However, it would not surprise me if it turns out to be 1940s, it appears to have a beautiful depth of colour.

My daughter lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan (45 miles away) and will be bringing it here this PM. Can't wait to see it.
Thanks again.
