Hi again. I am intending to buy this genuine Afghan Kelim (Kilim) however I am new to rugs and I need some advice how much is this worth. Its a massive 5.02m x 2.90m size. It looks lovely and I want it for my living room. Any advice of a value and also if this is genuine? cheers

I would have thought the shop value of this piece is $1000. However if you are buying it privately then half that maybe.

Hmm, I would have thought it would be worth a lot more. I assume these rugs are handmade? How long does it take to make one of these? and then this get sold for only $1000. I am confused:-)

I totally agree with you that the price for the work done is very low. This does not just apply to this kilim but just about all rugs. This probably has taken six months to weave as part of chores of a household. Done under production conditions then probably about two months. When you compare rugs with other works of art, and I do classify good rugs as a work of art, then their prices are next to nothing.

Thanks for your reply. That is very surprising. I would have thought that the materials alone would cost quite a bit. These Belgium synthetic machine made rugs you get in shops cost quite a bit, something like the above size made my a computer in 20 minutes would cost almost the same as the real thing. Why in earth would anyone buy a synthetic machine made carpet if I can buy a handmade piece of art like the above? My partner is an artist, she paints and her painting are no different to a handmade rug really in my view. Both pieces are artworks. A carpet obviously is a lot more work though, maybe not as enjoyable as creating a painting either I assume.......if it is a chore I mean? I guess I have a lot to learn about rugs. The rug above is for sale for $1200 in private sale. I guess that is too much in that case. I would have thought it be worth at least $2500. Anyway thanks for you feedback, cheers
