First, let me thank the admins on this forum for their service and for letting me post here.

2nd, I'm away from home right now and from my rugs and camera but I have two rugs that I want to post here and ask for the help of the members. I do have some camera phone photos of one and I'm going ahead and posting them here; I don't think they're terrible but if it turns out you all need more/better photos then I'll post them when I return home.

Here's my story on this first rug.

I acquired this rug in the mid-late 80's from the family of a retired Air Force colonel. I don't know how old it is supposed to be but I did have an appraisal done at the time which I now cannot find. Here's is some of the info that was on the appraisal as best as I can remember it: Nain; 80% wool 20%silk; name woven into the rug was either Hammadi, Hamadi or Hammamadi and I can't remember for sure or the exact spelling as you can see; the appraised amount was $26,000. It's size is roughly 9.5 x 6.5 feet.

I had not done any research all of these years but now got a bit curious and decided to do some internet looking and found this site among many others. I now know that the signature is probably not any of the above 3 that I named and is more likely a Habibian, nice rug with fake Habibian or just a bad fake Habibian.

So, please, any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated and I apologize in advance if the photos are inadequate and will be happy to post more next week with the other rug, a Tabriz (I presume).

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.
You have a very nice rug posted. From what I see it looks like the signature is not added and the rugs design and quality would fit its signature.

It does say Iran Habibian but I would disagree with KAD, although it's a good rug I don't think it's the finest or most systematic form of knotting. I'd say the valuation, especially for back then, is very ambitious.

Thank you for your responses and please excuse my ignorance as I ask quesitons.

I've always assumed my appraisal from back in the 80's was inflated to some degree as I asked for it to be used for insurance purposes. I can't remember what I paid but it was less than a $1000 for the two rugs. I guess I should now be further suspect that the guy may not have known what he was doing because I'm sure that the appraisal said the signature was something like "Hamadi" and for sure it didn't say "Habibian"; which I gather from my readings in recent days is quite significant and well known.

The only other comment the appraisal made that I can remember is "80% wool, 20% silk"; are the photos consistent with that? Are the photos sufficient for you to comment about the type/quality of the wool?

So, in your opinions are we dealing with a rug that was made in the real Habibian factory or is it another local area maker that chose to include the signature or do you think something else entirely?

In my reading, it seems that much is made about the LAA and KPSI; are you able to comment about these from my photos?

Any idea of the age of the rug?

Thanks.

I agree with little Persia about the uneven knot structure. But even very fine rugs made in 1970 - 80 looked different from fine rugs today.
