I was told this is a 1960's Meshkin, 100% wool on cotton foundation. A one of a kind ( but arent all meshkin rugs one of a kind?) It is 13 ft x about 9ft. Very good condition.
My boyfriend purchased this rug at an estate sale brought it to my place, rolled it out and I was shocked how large it was.....next thought was oh my its red white and blue, not my favorite decorating colors. He says well I dont want it so roll it up, get rid of it because he wasnt going to take it back home....I rolled it up the next morning and put it in the closet for a year!!! Yes, I know Im horrible...my curiosity started to get to me, rolled it out, took photos and started searching..... that was 6 months ago..... I have looked at thousands of rugs online and in books, I must be missing something....then a rug salesman tell me its meshkin, yippie a place to begin learning.....and then the trail just died again.....the border and medallions and colors all say meshkin but some of the characters look more Indian to me...what do the # characters mean, the serpent/snake? are they lotus or hands I cant tell?.....Let me tell you I adore this rug now, I look at it for hours,I see all the little things that were done deliberately such as the bird/ducks eye colors reversed, flowers reversed also....Ive grown to love the deep rich red and in the beginning my mind thought the blue should be a royal blue , but I love this lighter blue....it really is my rug now and I truly appreciate the workmanship....just need identification FOR SURE and VALUE....Thank you all for your time I enjoy reading the post and looking at everyones rugs/carpets.

Your rug salesman was close. It is from Ardabil or Ardebil which is very close to the Meshin area. Age 1960-70 is correct.

Fantastic, a quick search on the internet led me to a couple of Ardibil rugs with enough similar traits that Im very sure it isnt a Meshkin......if my rug was made in the 60's to 70's does that mean it isnt handmade, more of a company creation instead of one of a kind?? That snake throws me off. Thank you for putting me on the right track. Friends come over and ask what new things have you learned about your rug, Im getting them hooked on the beauty and craftsmanship.
