Hello,

First of all, let me apologize for the abysmal quality of these photos. If I had access to the rug, I'd take them again!
The object of interest is a large carpet(approx 9x12 feet, 275x365cm). It has a lot in common with the American Sarouk type - the same raspberry color, white to light blue wefts. However, the pattern isn't quite the same floral spray I associate with American Sarouks. Another thing that seems different to me (in my limited experience) is that there is fringe on one end only. The other end has a short (~3cm) kilim section. I'm used to seeing fringe on both ends of American Sarouks. I'm pretty sure it was made in the 1950's or earlier.

So, what do you think? Is it a variant American Sarouk, some other variety of Sarouk, or something else entirely? Thanks in advance for your help!

Obviously as you know they were all made in the Saruk (Arak) area. The name American Saruk was given to the pieces that were special order from the US because of the size, colours and designs that they wanted. So in that sense it is not an American Saruk but it is a variant of Saruk. The fringe part is neither here nor there. It is always better for a rug if the fringe is left in the kilim form rather than unravelling it and putting in stops. By the way you are right the photos are not good at all. If I get it wrong I am going to blame the photos.:D

Yes, Sarough variation. Acutally it is a Mahal from the 1940 - 50' s of good knotting and wool quality.
