THis rug has bits of colored tinsel woven through out, any ideas about this? Also I would like to know what kind of rug this is. Thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks for your reply. ANy ideas on the bits of colored tinsel through out the rug. I didn't notice it when I bought it, but later once it was home. Just curious about it, seems so odd to find red, blue, green, and gold tinsel woven into the rug.

I would imagine it's viscose (or less likely silk) that's been woven into the rug. If it's hardened it is probably happened in the cleaning process or a subsequent cleaning of the rug.

Weavers at times use markers to indicate where they started / left off if they share the loom with others. In rugs from the last 20 years, including peshawar (green plastic, very thin), afghan rugs, and a few others, I have seen plastics used. In older rugs the markers are typically natural fiber.
