Hello,
I am posting photos of a rug that measures about 400 x 300 cm for identification and to get an idea of a fair price.
I have not seen this rug in person, only these photos, and can not verify the knot count, or much else for that matter, but the seller claims it is a 70 raj Tabriz wool pile with silk highlights. He is unsure of the foundation material. The age of the rug is thought to be more than 20 years old.

It certainly is not a 70 raj Tabriz. It is difficult to tell what the knot count exactly is from these photos but it could be a 60 raj one. It is a very nice piece and if it does not have any faults then I think a fair price for it would be $5000 assuming that it is not from a dealer.

Definitely wouldn't say 70 raj but looks like a fine 50 raj and worth a lot of money, you might pay more than $5000 in Iran these days for a 50 raj Mahi Tabriz in that size.

Hello again,
And thank you for the replies.

I spoke with the seller again and he insists that it is a 70 raj. I've asked for photos of the back of the rug with a rule to gauge the size and number of knots.

Any advise on other things to look for to determine the value of the rug is appreciated.

Photos of the back will be important - although not everything, the difference between 50 and 70 is almost double the knot density

Fine Tabriz but from the pictures I would say not even 50 raj. A full 50 raj rug would have above 7 knots per cm = more than 49 knots per square cm. Also it looks to be not as old as written.

New photos with a quarter for scale. I count 16 to 17 knots across the quarter roughly 1 inch. Multiplied by 2.7559 (7 cm/ 1 raj) and come up with around 46 to 47 knots in 1 raj. Would this be considered 50 raj? And can this rug be confirmed as being a genuine Tabriz mahi?

One more question. When using the rug estimator, there is an input for the number of plies. From the close up photo of the back, can the number of plies be determined? I count 3 to 4 ply. Is this correct?

More questions. The rug estimator also asks for the type of fibers used and I plugged in different combinations and found a huge variance in price. Can the type of wool be seen in these photos? Big difference when kork wool / silk combination is input. Also if vegetable dyes are used.

It would be classified is 50 raj. But I am almost sure it's not natural dyes. It's still a good piece.

this is 1 or 2 ply. probably not veggie dye. some types of rugs were never made in the array of wool qualities listed on the estimator
