Could someone please describe the so-called "samavari" design that is sometimes included in a rug's description? Thank you.

Do you mean Samovar or Turtle design seen in many Persian borders-- ??? which is the shape of a brass Persian or Russian coffee/ tea urn type figure with 2 handles or a turtle with its shell and head poking out at the top with two front claws extended....

Thank you. A rug I just bought (photo attached) was described as "Kurdish samavari". It doesn't have a samovar/turtle border, but I wonder whether the designs in the corners are stylized samovars. What do you think?

I agree-- does not look like a turtle or samovar border. Guess we need the experts to weigh in on the Samavari Kurdish design.

The term Samowar design (Nachshe Samowari) is usually used to describe a design that is typically made in the Hamadan distrct in western Iran. The design is common in antique Malyaer rugs (most of them made in the small village Mishan = Mishan Malayer.

Please excuse if I don´t agree with Peter Stone´s book. The border posted could be desribed as samowari style, but this term is not used in the rug trade nor is it used in Iran to describe it. But naming persian rug designs is always involving a lot of phantasy.

A typical rug with Nachshe Samowari would look like the ones you find on the following links:

The posted red rug looks more like an Afshari / Niris rug than kurdish. Please post detail picture of the back for identification.
