Hi,

we inherited this beautiful woven rug (see photo), with many animals depicted. Since we enjoy looking at it every day, we'd like to know more about it, in particular its country of origin. Does anybody have any information on this kind of rug?

Hi - based on the yarn showing from underneath - unless the rug is tattered, the type may be a soumac. Do you have more photos?

Hi,

thank you for your reply. There is a lot of yarn underneath, I attach 4 photos with more details, 2 of them showing details on the top, 2 show the back side. Do the motives and patterns point to any particular country/region?

With all due respect to Nick it is a pretty Shahsavan Soumac from Northwest of Iran. Shahsavan is a tribe around the foothills of Sabalan mountain. While it is not very easy to tell from the photos but it appears to be about 20 years old.

Yes, Shahsavan from Iran, nice piece. Sometimes you even find them made of silk.
