Sharafi, Thank you for your feedback in identifying the rug as an Ardebil from northwest Iran. I could not find anything like it online or in my references. I got this rug in 1992 just after we moved into our house. So, its older than 20 years old. It came from an estate sale of an elderly lady who damaged the rug at one end probably with a small flower pot because the damage is circular--However, since being on this forum, I've developed a new respect for all of my rugs no matter what their condition, and this one, I want to repair myself using Peter Stone's repair book and online help. But my question is about its age-- The Iranain Embargo was from 1986 - 1999 which was not enforced tightly enough to prevent rugs being imported from 3rd party countries into the USA. Later a temporary window opened in 2000 by the Clinton administration to allow the export of rugs, caviar, and the pistashios. So this means this rug either came inot the US earlier than 1986 or was imported through another country during the 1986- 1999 embargo? Thanks!!
