I plan to use this rug to practice repairs on. It has damage at one end that is circular. I just washed this Rug myself so it is still damp. It measures 8 ft 4 in. By 59 inches. I rescued it from the basement rec room since learning more about rugs on this forum and washed it with woolite outside, so this will be my project for repair. Can you tell me if it is a Perepedil or something else and its approx age? I had to keep cropping the pic to make it postable on the Forum. Thanks everyone. I still have a few more rugs to ask about in our house. BTW, I was really encouraged by one of the members post on repairing fringes. Thanks!!!

Well your image titles call it an Ardebil, in northwest Iran. That is what it is. I didn't notice any areas that needed repair. It is about 10 to 20 years old.

Sharafi, Thank you for your feedback in identifying the rug as an Ardebil from northwest Iran. I could not find anything like it online or in my references. I got this rug in 1992 just after we moved into our house. So, its older than 20 years old. It came from an estate sale of an elderly lady who damaged the rug at one end probably with a small flower pot because the damage is circular--However, since being on this forum, I've developed a new respect for all of my rugs no matter what their condition, and this one, I want to repair myself using Peter Stone's repair book and online help. But my question is about its age-- The Iranain Embargo was from 1986 - 1999 which was not enforced tightly enough to prevent rugs being imported from 3rd party countries into the USA. Later a temporary window opened in 2000 by the Clinton administration to allow the export of rugs, caviar, and the pistashios. So this means this rug either came inot the US earlier than 1986 or was imported through another country during the 1986- 1999 embargo? Thanks!!

It's an Ardabil design but I'm not convinced it's Persian, could be Turkish.

That aside I don't really think the embargo is a good way of predicting age, I'm sure thousands of rugs came into the US during the embargo which were Persian one way or another.

Little Persia,
Thanks for your feedback!! I meant to say Ardebil, not Perperdil on the title-- sorry for the confusion. Also thank you for clarifying the impact of the Persain embargo. I always wondered if the embargo had an impact on Iranian rugs availability and the embargo provided an opportunity for other countries to produce Persian designs rugs for the demand or that were being passed off as Persian. Judging from the condition of the rug when I bought it, it was at least 10 years and I have had it for @22 years. So I know it is more than 22 years old and then some. So that is why I asked to get a better fix on the age and to verify the type.

Can you tell from the knots if it is a Persian or Turkish rug?

I would appreciate any feedback you can give me. It has a small hole at the end of the othe border you cannot see which I intend to repair (learn/ practice repair on). I wanted to make sure it was not too valuable before I proceeded with the repair. I intend to use Peter Stone's book as a guide for making the repairs. Thanks again!

this is very close to ardabil - many will actually have a cloth tag saying ardabil if the tag exists or is legible, although I believe this typically is where the rugs were traded through. i think this rug is more closely related to meskin rugs. yes, it does appear to be persian.

I checked the back of the rug for a tag and there is not a tag that says Ardebil, but a tag with Arabic numbers which is probably a lot number???. It has a cotton warp amd both a sinuous and rigid warp. Additional pic is attached.

Iranian Ardebil rug, 1970/80, pre embargo production. Commercial quality with sort of edgy design which is typical for this type. Your question about the knots: Almost all rugs in this area are using the turkish knot (tabriz, meshgin, ardebil, heriz, ahar, ....). It is a good rug to learn to restore since it is not too fine and constructioni is easy to understand.
