We have rugs in every corner and nook in our house. I took early 4 months ago and now taking the time to find out what we have and how to take better care of it. From your feedback, I am cleaning my rugs differently and taking better care of the selvedges and fringes. I understand the impact on their value now. I've expanded my library to include a book on tribal rugs, rug repair, lexicon of rugs, etc. so with that knowledge, will be keeping some and replacing some and taking a lot better care of all of them. My question is on this rug we got 3 years ago from a resale shop for $75??? It measures 6' 3 " by 3' 6". It has a white wool warp and brown weft with a short pile. Is it newer, 1980's? Is this a Caucasus rug and what type? Does it has value or can it become an investment rug? It currently goes well in the hall upstairs, but I need to mind its frnges which are very long. Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi RugPro,
Is its attribution based on the colors, knots and design. How can you tell? Is it the wool warp? If you could help me understand, it would be greatly appreciated!!!!

yes the warp appears to be wool although resolution seems too low to zoom in so not 100%. I think afghani because the appearance of the weave, the darker weft, the flat woven end. It may also be from elsewhere too, but afghan seems ok. Very good deal at 75 for sure

A nice tribal rug for a very good price. I would guess this is a Turkish rug and I recommend you have chain stitching and trimming done on the fringe before the pile starts to unravel.

RugPro and RugFirm,

Thanks again for your fast responses. I just discovered how to take phots 'in the frame' which allows high resolution pics focused only on the item.

I have another question,--how can you tell the difference between Afghan and Turkish tribal rugs? I have three Peter Stone 's books-- Tribal and Village rugs and Oriental Rug Repair and Oriental rugs Lexicon and Motifs. It's helpful, but still difficult. Any tips you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! Please bear with me as I ask you about more rugs. Thanks!!

those are all fantastic books. unfortunately there are too many types with both Turkish and Afghan to really say how to tell the difference but it helps to see many, many many rugs from both weaving areas.

When you want to know ID we will always help - Books are amazing too, but you need to see and feel as many rugs as possible to learn them. One way may be to build a good reputation with a rug dealer / cleaner I am sure they will gladly share knowledge and should have plenty of stock to page through in the store.

Not very easy to distinguish one from the other. However, as a general rule, Afghans have a sharper, brighter, and somewhat stronger color combination.

Can you say that the Turkisk rugs all have Turkish knots and the Afghan rugs can have either Persian aymmetric knots or Turkish knots?

Many factors make it possible to tell the origin of a rug. The rug you posted is turkish, 20-30 years old.
