Hi, I have had this rug for a while, I do not know anything about it. I do not know if it is just some type of novelty rug sold to tourists somewhere or if it may be something special? Any help with it would be much appreciated!!! It is about 6 feet by 3.5 feet. Only one side is presentable.

Thanks Again!

This is a Pesian Shahsavan Soumak kelim. It is pretty and looks as if it is silk but you can probably judge that better by touching it.

Thanks for the info!!! I dont know if it is silk, I do not know much about rugs, but it is very stiff and course feels similar to a burlap bag.

Do you have any idea if this is old? Were these types of rugs produced for local use or where they just made to sell to tourists or export?

Thanks Again!!!

I am almost sure it is silk. It is not coarse in fact it is a fine weave and valuable. This is a tribal piece and very rarely carpets in iran are produced for the tourist market, mainly because Iran does not have a tourist business as such. You have a good piece there

Thanks again Sharafi & Co!!!

Is it appropriate for me to ask how valuable this may be? Right now it is just folded up like a blanket in a box, which is how I got it. I would imagine I should roll it up, Is there any other things I should do to keep it in the best condition possible? It already has some type of clamps on it where it was once hung on a wall.

Also this rug looks almost primitive in nature and not completely symmetrical from top to bottom. Even though I could tell that there was an incredible amount of craftsmanship that went into this, is this typical of these types of rugs? As well as all of the loose thread ends on the bottom of it?

Thanks!!!

Rolling up is always the best way to keep a rug and make sure it is not in a damp place. The silk hanging from the back is normal for a sumak weave. It is difficult to value things just from photos, as I have a feeling this has a bit of an age. I do not think you would get much change out of $1500 if you wanted to buy this from a shop.
