I was given this a few weeks ago after helping out with a research project, The dimensions of the rug are; 5.3m x 3.4m (17.3' x 11') - weighs an absolute ton. Thanks guys,
I forgot to mention it has 'Kashan' embroidered/stitched into one of the white edge between the tassels and the rug. As well as 69/71. Any idea what this would mean?
The research was a study on her family history - about $250's work!
I think the rug is wool.

Kashan is a very famous weaving center in Iran. It is not uncommon for Indian, Chinese,etc.. copies of Persian carpets to adopt one of the famous weaving centre names. So how do you differentiate between a Persian and a copy of a Persian?
And I thought porcelain marks were tricky!

The weave, the look, the wool, the colours, the fringes and experience of seeing a large number of them helps. You can copy any signature although I must say Indians and Chinese copies have very poor signature copies. First Floor, unit 9 1 Chandos Road London NW10 6NF UK www.sharafiandco.com

A copy of Persian Mahi design made in India with cotton foundation and a thick wool pile. A rug like this should last for a very long time even in a high traffic area, just make sure you vacuum clean it often and have it washed every few years. The quality of wool on these rugs is such that if they accumulate lots of dust and dirt, they tend to wear a lot faster resulting in premature worn spots on the pile.
