I ran into a gentleman today at a sale who has this carpet. It ha been his mothers so he knew nothing about it. He said if I was interested (which I am) to make him an offer. The rug measures approx 9ft 1in x 12ft 4in. It is in very good condition. My questions are... First- what type of rug is this? Second- what is the most I should pay for this rug? I know he wants rid of it so I can get a good price, but im not sure it's worth buying.

So after a few days of research I decided this was a Tabriz style and close to being new. I offered the man 200 dollars and he accepted. Now I'm wondering if I was right and if I got a good deal or paid full retail. Any help would be appreciated..... Even if it's a mistake, at least it will be a learning experience : /

It is a bit difficult to tell from these photos, but I am sure it is not Tabriz. It looks very much like a Pakistan reproduction to me, especially if it feels not so dense. That will be difficult to do for you because you do not have anything to compare with. In any event you certainly have not paid retail and you have either got a good deal or a very good deal.

This appears to be a pak persian carpet made in or around the 1990s. the quality, color, and weave of this carpet would be considered to be among the better of those made in and around that time, with a commercial designation of weave perhaps 18/18 quality. If the carpet were new, today, the approximate retail range would most likely be between $4k - $7,5k. Keep in mind, this is in unused condition so which is NOT your rug. The average used rug of this type and quality will probably change hands in private seller private buyer scenario around $800 - 10000 with time holding out. This difference would not be considered a loss so much as someone has enjoyed this carpet on their floor for 20 years and it is not being sold in a retail establishment.
