Hi all,

Our latest acquisition has got some writing(?) on it, I was wondering if anyone out there could translate? Or is it 'fake' writing?

Also, any help with identification would be appreciated, this one has us a bit flummoxed!

Thanks in advance

Thanks Nick, it is an odd one! We've been debating and debating, it seems to have a bit of everything, we keep coming back to South Caucasian though are by no means sure.

Thanks very much Sharafi, I'd been arguing Kurd, mainly due to the way the colour is used (repeated elements woven in different, seemingly random, colours) but the colours themselves didn't seem strong enough which is why we thought Southern Caucuses and the Kurds there.

Thanks also for the translation, according to Wikepedia that is 1889 Gregorian.

After 1920 both the Turkish and Iranian calendar and rugs dating changed. After that date simply add 622 making this rug from 1929.

Therefore, you first need to establish what era this rug appears to be made. I think most would agree the 1929 date would be accurate..

Jacobsen has a great article found by googling oriental rug date.

While you are right Btuma6 but until about 1960s a lot of the rugs, especially village rugs in Iran still wove in the Islamic date. They are usually denoted by the word "Senneh", which means "date" in Arabic. But as you say the establishment changed the use of Calender from Islamic Lunar to Islamic Solar.
